Complex products in print catalogs require full page width

Product Page Width is one of the most important configuration settings in Catalog-on-Demand. It will have a major effect on the overall look of your print catalog or brochure. You have three choices:

  1. Half page width for all products;
  2. Full page width for all products; or
  3. Auto-width, which means that Catalog-on-Demand decides for you on a product-by-product basis.

We recommend that you choose full page width if you have complex products. Examples of complex products are those that have:

  • Lots of variants (such as many different sizes or colors)
  • Multiple differentiating attributes per variant (more than 2 or 3)
  • Images at the variant level (e.g., a different image for each color of a product)
  • Extensive HTML in the description

Sometimes simple products also look better in full page width. In particular, those that:

  • Have lengthy descriptions (more than a couple paragraphs)
  • Have numerous bullets (more than 5 or 10)

As always, we encourage you to experiment with your own product data to see what works best. Often your best bet is to start out with Auto Width. Then Catalog-on-Demand will examine each product and decide whether to make it half or full page width. Later, if you need to make sure the entire catalog is consistent, then you can easily set the width that works best for your catalog.
