You have a large investment in your e-commerce site. And you continually spend an enormous amount of time and money to get people to visit your site. But after they’ve visited, then what? They’re gone. There’s nothing left but a statistic. Will they remember you? No. I don’t need to tell you that this is the biggest problem with e-commerce sites. They just don’t have staying power. Unlike a retail store, there is not much about an e-commerce site that gives people a truly memorable experience. You already know that there are tips and tricks for making a site sticky. Blogs, white papers, funny videos, etc. But the problem is that these techniques don’t help sell products.
So here’s an idea that is both sticky and helps sell products. Put links to focused PDF flyers or brochures on your site that showcase selected products. If you make the title and content compelling and specific, the visitor will download the PDF. If it is short, they are likely to print it. If they like it, they will hand it to a colleague or read it on the bus. You can’t get much more sticky than that. And if the online version has links to your e-commerce site, they’ll be back for more information. Having small, targeted publications available for instant download is far better than asking your visitors to fill out a form to request a master catalog.
A variation on this theme is to mail out links to highly specific PDF brochures as part of your email marketing campaigns. The more focused the campaign and the PDF, the more likely they’ll download and open it. If they print it out, or forward the link, or just keep it around to view a few times, you’re miles ahead than if all you had was a landing page.
So if this is such a great idea, why don’t we see it being used? Why don’t we see links to targeted flyers or mini-catalogs all over the place? And why don’t emails contain links to such targeted publications?
The answer is cost. Until Catalog-on-Demand, it has been expensive to produce even one professional-looking publication, and exorbitantly cost-prohibitive to do so for every vertical opportunity. Now with Catalog-on-Demand, you’ll look at custom flyers in a whole new light. You’re going to want to produce, post, and email out links to publications for every niche. And as a consumer, you’re going to come to expect it. Custom flyers are a practical and compelling way of sharing product information, once the cost factor is brought down to a reasonable level.
